The images in this Flickr set are covers of books commonly known as Troubles thrillers – books that reflect aspects of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland in that big, bright fiction genre, the “action thriller”.   The Burns Library acquired Bill Rolston’s collection of Troubles thrillers in 2008, and these volumes are now a part of the Library’s Irish Collection. Dr. Rolston is Professor of Sociology at the University of Ulster and has researched and written on the subject of the Troubles in Northern Ireland and the corresponding peace process. He is best known for his work on the subject of Northern Ireland’s political murals. In 2010 he was appointed Director of the University of Ulster’s Transitional Justice Institute .
