It is with sadness that we note the passing of world-renowned Irish playwright Brian Friel. Perhaps most famous in North America for his Tony award-winning play Dancing at Lughnasa, Friel wrote over three dozen plays for stage and screen, including Molly Sweeney, Give Me Your Answer Do!, and an adaptation of Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler. Boston College students put on a performance of his play Translations a number of times, most recently in 2010. A performance of Dancing at Lughnasa is planned for the spring. The John J. Burns Library is fortunate to be able to share some of the many images of Friel taken by photographer Bobby Hanvey, in the Bobby Hanvey Photographic Archives, many of which can be found online.
